Lindisfarne Priory and Museum

Take a trip out to one of the holiest Anglo-Saxon sites in England. Discover this 'Cradle of Christianity' and take a fascinating journey into our spiritual heritage. The beautiful Priory of Lindisfarne is situated on Holy Island and only accessible by causeway at low tide. It gained particular holy significance after the corpse of St Cuthbert was discovered 11 years after his burial here in 698 and found to be mysteriously undecayed. The Priory subsequently became a revered shrine and place of pilgrimage. Lindisfarne was a treasure house of jewels and manuscripts including incomparable illuminated Gospels (now in the British Library). Today, in the award-winning museum, Anglo-Saxon carvings are displayed in a lively, atmospheric exhibition. The dramatic ruins of the medieval priory express its lasting power and beauty.
